How to Get Constructive Feedback on Your Next Design

In order to get feedback that’s helpful, it’s important to ask the right questions. A good way to start is to break down specific elements in the design and ask corresponding questions that are appropriate to that piece. We talked to a few designers to see what kinds of questions they ask to get the most out of feedback and put them together in a list for you!
Want effective feedback? Ask these questions:
- Is it visually appealing?
- Is the design timeless, or have I created something dated looking?
- Is it built well? Asymmetrical vs symmetrical vs design basics 101 vs screw design basics, I do what I want.
- Do you understand the message/feeling i’m trying to convey/evoke?
- Is it appropriate for the audience I am trying to reach?
- Is everything cohesive? theme, fonts/type, color, design style (grunge, illustrative, cartoon-ish, etc.)
- Will it work well for the medium (i.e. web, print, screen print, mobile, etc.)?
Who should you get advice from? When seeking feedback, make sure you trust the person providing you suggestions. This doesn’t mean they have to be a trained designer. Sometimes, having a a non-technical trained person review your work can give you some of the best “non-technical” answers. Also, it’s important that you give them a good platform to communicate it.
What are some of the best platforms to receive feedback? There are definitely various apps out there that provide great collaboration tools. One of our favorites that we use at RT HQs is Invision. It’s a great way to view the design, leave notes and test out the product!
